Joint replacement
Endoprosthetics in Moscow
Joint replacement surgery is one of the most common surgical procedures in traumatology and orthopaedics clinics.Degenerative-dystrophic arthrosis, ankylosing spondylitis, aseptic necrosis, post–traumatic arthrosis - all these pathologies are accompanied by impaired joint function and pain, which leads to a significant decrease in human quality of life.
In the event that conservative treatment methods are not able to alleviate the patient's condition and slow down the development of the disease, doctors recommend performing total joint replacement. In such an operation, the damaged joint is replaced with an endoprosthesis made of the most modern synthetic materials with high strength and wear resistance. Metal alloys, polymers, and ceramics are used to manufacture various components of endoprostheses.
Doctors of the European EMC Sports Traumatology and Orthopaedics Clinic have significant experience in restoring lost joint function. Our specialists regularly perform endoprosthetics knee, hip, ankle, shoulder and elbow joints using only internationally proven endoprostheses from world-renowned manufacturers such as ZIMMER, De–Puy, Smith&Nephew, Ceraver, Implantcast and others.
Indications for joint replacement
Normally, the surface of the joint is covered from the inside with cartilage, which provides easy sliding of the articular surfaces when performing movements. Synovial fluid prevents excessive friction of parts of the joint and, as a result, its premature wear.Pathological changes in the articular fluid, severe damage to the cartilage layer, and cartilage wear are signs of osteoarthritis, causing acute pain and limited mobility in patients. In most cases, the above symptoms are indications for endoprosthetics, an operation aimed at eliminating pain and restoring joint mobility (according to statistics from the world's leading endoprosthetics centers).
During the consultation at the EMC clinic, an orthopedic traumatologist will analyze the data from the performed diagnostic studies, conduct functional tests and determine whether there are indications/contraindications for joint replacement surgery. After discussing all the issues of interest with the patient, our specialist will select the necessary type of endoprosthesis.
Operation progress
The endoprosthetics procedure is the replacement of a worn-out joint with an artificial analogue. During the operation, damaged fragments of cartilage and bone tissue are removed, and after that they are replaced with an endoprosthesis that repeats the anatomical shape of a natural joint.
The operation usually takes from 30 to 60 minutes and is performed under general anesthesia or spinal anesthesia.
Rehabilitation after joint replacement
After the operation is performed at the EMC clinic, walking with a full load on the operated limb is allowed the very next day, which prevents patients from losing the ability to walk independently.Recovery period and rehabilitation program after endoprosthetics is individual for each patient. Following the instructions of your doctor will allow you to speed up your recovery. After the operation in our clinic, you will be under the supervision of an orthopedic surgeon, as well as a rehabilitologist, who will help you choose the optimal course of rehabilitation treatment to alleviate postoperative pain and develop the range of motion in the operated joint.
Recovery after surgery is a very important stage in treatment. Our clinic has a specialized rehabilitation department, where our specialists help patients return to their usual lifestyle as quickly as possible.Even in the supine position, rehabilitation takes place with the participation of instructors and a special automated device that bends and unbends the operated limb in a preset mode.
