Revision hip replacement
About 1.5 million hip replacement surgeries are performed worldwide every year. However, even very high-quality prostheses gradually wear out. There are cases when artificial joints last more than 40 years. At the same time, according to research data, about a quarter of implants need to be replaced within 15-20 years after installation, less than half after 25 years. In some cases, the endoprosthesis fails even earlier, which requires repeated surgical intervention. An operation to replace a previously installed prosthesis is called revision arthroplasty, revision surgery, or joint revision.
Indications for revision hip replacement
The main indications for repeated hip replacement include:
-
the development of infection in the implant placement area;
-
aseptic loosening of the prosthesis;
-
recurring and permanent dislocations of the artificial joint;
-
fractures in the area of the endoprosthesis;
-
wear of the implant components;
-
pain syndrome;
-
mechanical damage to the endoprosthesis.
Specifics of re-arthroplasty
Revision surgery is a more complex and lengthy surgical procedure compared to primary arthroplasty. It is associated with an increased risk of complications. Therefore, a highly qualified surgeon and an accurate choice of surgical tactics are the key to a successful TB revision.
Rehabilitation after revision arthroplasty
After the operation, the patient stays in the hospital for several days under the supervision of an orthopedic surgeon and a rehabilitologist. Specialists select the optimal course of rehabilitation treatment to relieve postoperative pain and develop a joint.
The duration and rehabilitation program after repeated arthroplasty are individual for each patient. The EMC Center for Sports Traumatology and Orthopedics has a rehabilitation department with special training equipment, where patients are helped to return to their usual lifestyle as quickly as possible. Following the doctors' recommendations accurately accelerates recovery.
Questions and answers
How safe is revision arthroplasty?
The EMC Center for Sports Traumatology and Orthopedics is the largest private orthopedic surgical clinic in Russia. The clinic's surgeons have many years of experience in revision hip surgery and perform treatment in accordance with European and North American protocols.
Modern EMC technical equipment allows for high-precision diagnostics. Minimally invasive surgical techniques and comprehensive rehabilitation programs reduce the time required to return to a normal lifestyle.
All this significantly reduces the risk of an unsuccessful result or complications, which, like with any surgical procedure, cannot be completely eliminated.
How long does rehabilitation last?
After the operation, the patient stays in the hospital for several days under the supervision of the attending surgeon and undergoes rehabilitation treatment in the rehabilitation department. He is then discharged home until his final recovery, which takes several weeks. The length of the rehabilitation period depends on the complexity of the operation and is individual for each patient.
What complications can occur?
TBS revision can be complicated by dislocation, infection, blood clots, lameness, fractures, damage to nerves or blood vessels, and loosening of the endoprosthesis.
What kind of examination should I undergo before surgery?
The examination includes blood, urine, fluorography, electrocardiography, ultrasound of the veins of the lower extremities. X-ray examination, computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging are performed to assess the condition of the prosthesis and bone tissue in the area of the endoprosthesis installation. Elderly patients and people with chronic diseases are referred for consultations with a cardiologist, neurologist and other specialized specialists.
