What is Bariatric Surgery?

Bariatric Surgery (Bariatrics)A method of treating obesity that involves surgical intervention on the digestive tract.

As a rule, bariatric methods are used in patients whose overweight poses a health risk, while conservative methods (diet, exercise) do not bring results. At the EMC Clinic, overweight patients are treated with surgical intervention by highly qualified and experienced surgeons using the most modern techniques.

Indications for surgery

The goal of the doctors of the EMC bariatric Center is to achieve the best result with the lowest risk of complications and adverse events. Therefore, the decision on the need for surgery for each patient is made by a multidisciplinary team, which, in addition to the surgeon, includes:

  • nutritionist
  • endocrinologist
  • psychologist
  • plastic surgeon
  • Gastroenterologist
  • cardiologist
  • psychotherapist

Our goal is to help the patient get rid of not just excess weight, but fat deposits, get long-lasting results, and eliminate diseases and risks associated with obesity.

The indications for the operation are:

  • morbid obesity (BMI is over 40, weight exceeds the upper limit by 100% or more);

  • obesity of the 2nd degree (BMI 35-40) or 1st degree (BMI 3035), if standard measures for weight loss (diet therapy, physical activity) are ineffective, or if there are concomitant diseases: diabetes mellitus, hypertension, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, high risk of cardiovascular diseases, severe degree of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.

Types of bariatric surgery

The goal of bariatric surgery of any type is to reduce the volume of the stomach and accelerate the movement of food through the gastrointestinal tract.

Weight loss can significantly improve the patient's condition, for example, more than 80% of patients can be cured of type 2 diabetes mellitus. All operations at the EMC clinic are performed by laparoscopic access, which does not leave noticeable scars. Types of surgical intervention for the treatment of obesity:

Installation of an intragastric balloon.

The most gentle surgery that does not involve long-term changes in the anatomy of the gastrointestinal tract. It can be performed in preparation for surgery in patients with a BMI of 50 and above. The doctor endoscopically inserts a balloon into the patient's stomach, into which saline solution is then pumped. As a result, the free volume of the stomach decreases, the patient forms the habit of eating less and loses up to 15-20kg in six months. After 6 months, the balloon is removed using a gastroscope.

Sleeve resection of the stomach.

The surgeon excises up to 80% of the stomach volume, including the area responsible for the secretion of the hunger hormone. The organ takes the form of a narrow tube that holds no more than 100-200ml of food. The operation lasts about an hour and a half and is well tolerated by the patients.

Gastric bypass surgery.

The most common operation in which the surgeon cuts off most of the stomach from the esophagus. The resulting "small stomach" with a volume of 50-60 ml is excreted directly into the small intestine, bypassing the suction part of the duodenum. As a result, not only the amount of food consumed decreases, but also the amount of calories absorbed.

Contraindications for bariatric surgery

Contraindications for bariatrics are associated with the identification of a high operational risk during the preparatory examination. Contraindications may be associated with excessive obesity of the patient, certain diseases of internal organs (ulcerative colitis, pancreatitis), severe cardiovascular pathologies. However, in most cases, after proper preparation, surgery is also possible in such patients.

Preparation and rehabilitation

Before the operation, the patient undergoes a standard examination, which is designed to identify existing health risks. Tests and consultations with specialized specialists (endocrinologist, gastroenterologist, etc.) are prescribed. Before surgery, the doctor may recommend following a certain diet or discontinuing certain medications.

Rehabilitation periods after operations performed by laparoscopic access are usually quite short. In the evening of the same day, the patient can get up and walk. After 2-3 days it will be possible to take liquid food and drink. During the month, the patient is advised to observe a protective regime: avoid swimming in pools and open bodies of water, and refrain from significant physical exertion.

Surgeons at the EMC Clinic have performed thousands of operations to treat obesity. The Da Vinci robot is used during surgical intervention, which minimizes the risk of errors and postoperative complications. The patient undergoes postoperative recovery in our center in a comfortable hospital.
