Treatment and rehabilitation of patients with multiple sclerosis
We provide comprehensive care to patients with multiple sclerosis at any stage of the disease:
- we use modern drugs and treatment regimens for multiple sclerosis, which have proven their effectiveness in Europe and the USA We carry out specialized rehabilitation in accordance with international standards.
Causes and forms of the disease
Multiple sclerosis is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the lining of the nerve fibers of the brain and spinal cord is affected. As a rule, the course of the disease is chronically recurrent with a wave-like change of exacerbations and remission. The duration of remissions can vary from several months to several decades. In some cases, if the treatment is effective, the exacerbation does not occur. To date, there are medications that can stop autoimmune aggression against the myelin sheath of its own nerve fibers. The drugs are effective for a certain percentage of patients. In rare cases, there is a progressive course — a severe form of the disease without remission.
Each exacerbation is associated with the appearance of inflammatory foci in the depths of the brain and spinal cord. Depending on the location of the inflammatory focus, the patient exhibits one or another neurological defect.
Symptoms of multiple sclerosis
- Visual impairment, usually on one side
- Double vision
- Impaired coordination, unsteady gait
- Numbness, weakness in the arms and legs, usually on one side of the body
- Tingling, feeling of "goosebumps" in the arms or legs
- Tremor (shaking of arms and legs)
- Vertigo
- Violation of urination
Most often, the disease develops in young active people between the ages of 15 and 60, so rehabilitation is important for maintaining working capacity, self-care, and independence from others for as long as possible. Rehabilitation treatment should be carried out during each exacerbation.
Rehabilitation goals for patients with multiple sclerosis:
- Maintaining physical fitness
- Improved coordination of movements
- Prevention of the development of pathological tone and contractures (joint movement restrictions)
- Social and household adaptation
Physical therapy

The EMC Medical Rehabilitation Center is equipped with high-tech equipment for the rehabilitation of patients with severe motor disorders: Locomat Pro, ReoAmbulator, Anti-Gravity Treadmill, Bioness Vector. With the development of pathological muscle tone, treatment with botulinum toxin injections can be performed. Also, individual splints are made for patients to facilitate walking and create the correct position of the limbs.
Hydrotherapy
Hydrotherapy is an effective method of rehabilitation for patients with multiple sclerosis. Exercises in water allow for adequate and harmonious physical activity, promotes muscle relaxation in case of abnormal tone. Activities at the pool include training on an underwater treadmill, underwater bicycles, steppers and swimming.
Pelvic organ Muscle Recovery
When the spinal cord is affected, even in the early stages of the disease, disorders of the pelvic organs, such as urination and defecation, may occur, in which case it is necessary to participate in the rehabilitation of a neurologist. Often, after an exacerbation, the defect regresses, but the symptoms persist, which can be caused by psychogenic disorders. A neurologist will perform a differential diagnosis to determine the true cause of urinary disorders and, if necessary, prescribe treatment to restore pelvic floor muscle tone.
Occupational therapy
Occupational therapy is necessary if the patient is experiencing difficulties in self-care. Classes with an occupational therapist help patients to adapt socially and restore their domestic independence. For the psychological comfort of patients with multiple sclerosis, it is important to remain active, able to work, and participate in family life. To practice everyday skills, the center has a training apartment and a training car.

Psychological support
Working with a psychologist and a neuropsychologist is crucial. The life expectancy of patients with multiple sclerosis today is the same as that of healthy people. The disease should not become an obstacle to learning, mastering a profession, or starting a family. It is important that patients maintain a positive attitude and motivation to be active.
Home care
Rehabilitation activities should be carried out regularly, so we create a self-study program for patients. The center's specialists can travel to the house to conduct on-site training. If necessary, we provide recommendations on the organization of the patient's living conditions in order to ensure his safety and the possibility of independent movement and self-service.
