Intensive care for newborns

The Intensive care unit for newborns at the EMC maternity Hospital is a modern intensive care unit where specialists help babies of gestational age from 22 weeks with a variety of problems:

• pathology of respiratory organs;

• pathology of the nervous system;

• disorders of cerebral circulation;

• infectious and inflammatory diseases;

• metabolic disorders;

• severe hemolytic disease;

• congenital malformations, etc.

The neonatal intensive care unit is equipped with all the necessary modern equipment to provide high-tech medical care from the first minutes of a child's life.

There are 5 intensive care units in the department. Each place is equipped with multifunctional artificial lung ventilation devices, which allow for both non–invasive and invasive ventilation, including the most modern to date - high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HCV ventilation of newborns).

In addition, each intensive care unit is equipped with multifunctional monitors and a sledgehammer or an open intensive care system.

The EMC intensive care unit is equipped, among other things, with rare equipment that is not installed in all intensive care units for newborns. We use a hypothermia device to care for babies born with severe asphyxia. To ensure maximum safety of newborns, specialists use compounders, devices that dilute therapeutic solutions in sterile conditions. The exclusion of the human factor in this case helps not only to ensure an absolutely accurate dosage, but also reduces the risk of infection of newborns to almost 0. In addition, we use the most modern equipment for intensive phototherapy.

The maternity and operating units are also equipped with equipment for providing intensive care to babies from the first minutes of life. Each maternity ward has an open intensive care system with monitoring and ventilation equipment. For transportation from the maternity unit to the intensive care unit, we use a transport truck, which is equipped with a monitor and a perfuser system for continuous infusion therapy. This is how we transport small patients from the maternity unit and the operating room, constantly monitoring their condition.

In order to maintain the physical and psychological bond between mother and baby, nursing sessions are conducted using the "kangaroo" method - laying the newborn on the mother's breast. This technique is part of developmental care and has a beneficial effect on the recovery of the baby.

• Intensive care allows parents to stay together with the newborn. At the request of mom and dad, they can stay with the baby at any time. Parents receive all information about the baby's condition and further treatment tactics from doctors.

• If the need for inpatient treatment appears after discharge, we are ready to provide the necessary assistance at any time.

• After stabilization, the babies are transferred to the second stage of nursing in Department of Neonatal Pathology of the EMC.
