Advantages of orthodontic treatment in EMC
Malocclusion causes not only aesthetic discomfort, but can also negatively affect overall health. The body is a single system, and if an imbalance appears in one part of it, it will affect other organs as well. Malocclusion can cause snoring, hypertonia of the masticatory muscles, osteochondrosis and digestive problems. Unevenly placed teeth create additional stress on the temporomandibular joint, as a result, a headache appears. Therefore, if the dentist recommends contacting an orthodontist at the reception, do not delay the visit. The sooner you contact a specialist, the sooner you will eliminate the shortcomings, get rid of the unpleasant accompanying manifestations and will please everyone with your impeccable smile.
When is orthodontic treatment indicated?
- Malocclusion
When properly bitten, the upper row of teeth is in contact with the lower one, while the front teeth overlap the lower teeth by 1/3. If the bite is incorrect, this proportion is violated. As a rule, the problem of malocclusion has existed since childhood. The main causes are: a genetic defect, birth trauma, artificial feeding, malnutrition, and bad habits. In adulthood, bite problems often occur if a defect in the area of extracted teeth is not repaired in time.
- Crowding of teeth
Crowding of teeth, or the curvature of teeth, is a consequence of the fact that they are too close to each other. As the teeth do not have enough space in the jaw, they begin to move in different directions. Most often, the cause of such deformity is heredity, and such a defect can also be triggered by wisdom teeth. If they do not have enough space in the jaw, they begin to put pressure on neighboring teeth, move them, and can damage neighboring teeth.
- Large interdental distance/gap
Often, a gap between the front teeth or large interdental distances causes great aesthetic discomfort. Such a defect can be congenital or acquired due to tooth loss or bad habits.
Contraindications to orthodontic treatment:
- mental disorders;
- osteomyelitis;
- some blood diseases;
- some malignant tumors.
Orthodontic treatment methods
The choice of orthodontic treatment method is individual in each case. It all depends on the complexity of the pathology, the type of dental curvature and the age of the patient.
- Removable plate is an orthodontic system consisting of a plastic base and a metal arch. It is usually used for intermediate orthodontic treatment in children. The plates help to expand the dentition, replace crooked teeth, and correct minor malocclusion. The duration of wearing the plates is determined by the orthodontist, depending on the problem.
- Myofunctional therapy (trainers, myohymnastics) - silicone devices used to train the muscles of the orofascial region, helping to correct the bite in young children.
- Invisalign mouthguards are removable transparent silicone mouthguards. The great advantage of mouth guards is that they are completely invisible and imperceptible on the teeth, and they are removed during meals and oral hygiene. In case of significant abnormalities, the orthodontist may decide in favor of wearing braces.
- Bracket systems are non–removable structures consisting of the braces themselves, small square locks that are attached to the teeth and arches connecting them. Braces can solve almost any orthodontic problem. Many people, despite the doctor's recommendation, do not want to get braces, considering this method to be unethical. But you don't have to worry about this, because along with the classic external braces, there are also internal braces (lingual), which are attached to the back of the teeth, so they are completely invisible.
- Orthognathic surgery is bite correction by surgery. Surgical treatment is necessary for very complex problems that cannot be solved with braces alone. As a rule, the orthodontist straightens the teeth with braces first, and then the operation is performed. Such a combined treatment, in addition to eliminating the problem, restores facial symmetry, makes facial features softer and more attractive.
Treatment stages
Stage 1 – diagnostics
The doctor evaluates the state of oral health, if caries or inflammatory diseases are found, they must be cured. It is also necessary to undergo professional oral hygiene. Only then can you make an orthodontic treatment plan.
Stage 2 – preparation for installation of the orthodontic system
Regardless of which correction method is chosen – plates, mouth guards or braces – dental casts are taken from the teeth, jaw X-rays and CT scans are performed. All this is necessary in order to produce an ideal orthodontic system.
Stage 3 – installation of the orthodontic system
Removable mouthguards are installed in 15 minutes, and they need to be replaced every two weeks. The task of each new mouth guard is to change the position of the teeth and put them in the right position.
The external bracket system is installed in an hour on average, the lingual braces will take about 2 hours to install. The process of installing braces: teeth are treated with a special substance, then braces are attached to each tooth, after which they are connected by tightening arches. Braces should be performed regularly, usually once every 4-6 weeks. After braces are installed and corrected, unpleasant sensations may occur. But they go away within a few days, and in some patients they do not occur at all. It is important to understand that after treatment you will have perfectly smooth, beautiful teeth.
Braces require particularly careful care, it is important to brush your teeth 2 times a day, use an irrigator, and floss so that food residues do not accumulate in the elements of the orthodontic structure.
Duration of treatment
The duration of orthodontic treatment ranges from six months to two years. It is different for each patient.
