Astigmatism

If it is difficult for a person to focus while looking at an object, it may be astigmatism. This is a common eye disease that, if left untreated, can lead to vision loss.

The front surface of a normal eye is round, like a soccer ball. In people with astigmatism, the front surface looks more like an oval rugby ball.

Because of this, the light beam, refracting through the structures of the eye and focusing on the retina, incorrectly transmits the image of objects – unfocused.

People with astigmatism may simultaneously suffer from nearsightedness or farsightedness.

Causes of astigmatism

Astigmatism can be congenital or acquired.

Among the reasons are:

• A genetic predisposition

• Eye injuries

• Eye surgery

Contrary to popular belief, the disease does not develop due to reading in a poorly lit room, prolonged computer work, or prolonged TV watching.

Symptoms of astigmatism

With a mild degree of astigmatism, vision may not suffer.

With a pronounced degree of astigmatism, in addition to the inability to focus on the subject, blurring and distortion of nearby or distant objects, the following signs are present:

• Headache when trying to focus

• Eye fatigue.

Diagnosis of astigmatism

The study that is carried out to detect astigmatism is computer refractometry. The procedure will help diagnose and will also help identify nearsightedness or farsightedness.
