A hemangioma is a benign vascular skin formation found in 10% of infants. It appears as bright red nodules or plaques with a smooth or uneven surface.
Most often, such formations (one or more) appear in the first month of a child's life. They usually grow actively during the year, after which they gradually begin to fade, flatten and disappear.
Sometimes formations take on impressive dimensions and outlines, which can alarm and even frighten parents, however, it must be remembered that in 50% of children, hemangiomas regress independently without any treatment during the first 5 years of life, and by the age of 9 disappear in 90% of children.
To date, it is unknown why hemangiomas occur in infants, but it has been statistically revealed that they are more common in premature infants. Girls are more likely than boys.
In most cases, treatment of uncomplicated hemangiomas is not required. However, in our country, many doctors regularly recommend cryodestruction (using liquid nitrogen) or laser excision in such cases. These methods are very painful for the child and leave unnecessary scars.
European standards of medicine deny the need to remove hemangiomas. Constant monitoring and surgical intervention are recommended only in case of complications.
Premature removal can threaten children with quite obvious cosmetic defects.
Treatment of hemangiomas is required in very rare cases when important functions such as breathing, vision or hearing are affected, or when complications occur in the form of wounds, ulcers or bleeding. In such cases, the use of medical treatment methods is required: corticosteroids, beta-blockers and external treatments.
