Curvature of the penis
An aesthetic disadvantage such as penile curvature can be either congenital or acquired. In the case of a birth defect, the cause is an underdevelopment of the protein membrane of the corpus cavernosum of the penis. Externally, this is manifested by the fact that the penis bends in the direction where the protein shell is shorter. Acquired curvature of the penis appears due to the following reasons:
- Peyronie's disease — dense specific plaques in the protein shell of the cavernous bodies of the penis,
- oleogranuloma of the penis — the introduction of foreign substances under the skin of the penis,
- the consequences of inflammation of the cavernous bodies of the penis,
- consequences of injuries and wounds.
It should be understood that neither in an erect state nor in a relaxed one, the penis can be absolutely straight, therefore, penile straightening is indicated only if it causes discomfort to the man or his partner during sexual intercourse, or even causes problems with an erection.
The examination usually consists of a consultation with a urologist and a visual examination. It may also be necessary to perform an ultrasound examination of the penis in a state of erection. After the above manipulations, the doctor will be able to make an accurate diagnosis, determine the cause and choose a penile correction technique.
Unfortunately, it is impossible to straighten the penis except by surgical method. To date, there are 3 main methods of operations:
Group 1 – penis straightening by shortening the protein shell on the opposite side relative to the curvature. Thus, the penis straightens up, but its length decreases slightly. This method is indicated for patients with a sufficiently long penis, a 0.5-2 cm change in length will not significantly affect the appearance.
Group 2 – penis straightening by lengthening the protein shell on the side of the curvature. This operation is indicated for Peyronie's disease. It allows not only to straighten the penis, but also in some cases to increase its length.
Group 3 – penis straightening on a phalloprosthesis. This method is absolutely indicated in the case of erectile dysfunction.
Operations of groups 1 and 2 are outpatient, which means that the patient goes home a couple of hours after the operation. Group 3 requires a 24-hour hospital stay. As for the recovery period, penile edema is possible for 2-3 days, and abstinence from sexual activity for at least 1.5 months is necessary.
