Chronic stress

There are three phases of stress:

  • The first is the "anxiety" reaction: at the moment of stress, all the body's defenses are mobilized in response to an irritating factor. The first phase lasts from 6 to 48 hours. In this case, the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems are activated
  • In the second phase of chronic stress, the body resists stress factors and becomes more resistant to stimuli
  • The third stage of chronic stress leads to exhaustion – the adaptive mechanisms of the body have exhausted themselves due to prolonged overexertion. This stage often ends with depression.

In addition, several stress factors can affect a person, which, as a result of a prolonged course, leads to exhaustion of the central nervous system and the formation of psychological problems.

Symptoms and signs

There are physical and psychological symptoms of chronic stress. A person may experience headaches, dizziness, abdominal discomfort, upset stomach, sleep disorders, and palpitations.

Signs of chronic stress also include changes in appetite: it can become both bad and increased, and mood swings are noted among psychological symptoms. He becomes very nervous and hypersensitive, is depressed and pessimistic, feels helpless, and has difficulty concentrating.

Additionally, you can eliminate the feeling of fatigue, apathy, nervousness or fussiness, cravings for alcohol or junk food.

Causes of the disease

Every person is faced with stressful factors on a daily basis: for some it is work, for others it is personal relationships, for others it is frequent business trips. However, not everyone experiences a state of prolonged stress. The way we deal with this condition is influenced by genetic, hormonal, and psychological factors that are individual to each individual.

Often, people, being in a state of constant stress, face a feeling of a “vicious circle”: when, against the background of a general malaise, a person stops doing their usual things, their productivity and work speed decrease, and they are less attracted to their previous interests. In response, guilt arises, which leads to anxiety, irritation and increases stress.

Chronic stress is dangerous for your health. A person who has been living in this condition for a long time has decreased immunity, and he often begins to get sick. Against the background of chronic stress, the heart rate increases, as a result, blood pressure rises and the cardiovascular system becomes very vulnerable.

Diseases of the gastrointestinal tract occur because when a person's cortisol levels increase, their blood sugar levels increase. This leads to a decrease in insulin production and as a result leads to obesity/ diabetes mellitus and subsequently to atherosclerosis.

With an increase in cortisol, the amount of serotonin decreases, so a person with this condition often experiences depression. At the same time, when a person gets rid of irritable factors, the state of prolonged stress may disappear, but due to a lack of internal resources, it is not possible to fully recover: in this case, a person may experience sleep disorders, mood disorders, anxiety, etc.

Treatment of chronic stress

Chronic stress is treated with medication, psychotherapy, biofeedback therapy (CBT), and mindfulness practice. Drug treatment helps to cope with prolonged chronic stress. As a rule, these are patients who have had trouble sleeping for a long time, suffer from burnout syndrome and cannot help themselves on their own.

Treatment with sessions with a psychotherapist is especially effective for chronic stress. The specialist uses the method of cognitive behavioral therapy. This is a scientifically proven treatment method that has a clear structure and protocol for dealing with any symptom, whether it's depressive symptoms, apathy, procrastination, anxiety, or any other signs. Mindfulness practice is a method of developing a non–judgmental approach to any situation, which gives the patient the opportunity to distance themselves from obsessive thoughts, stop the process of self–flagellation, and help them cope with what reduces the quality of life.

Treatment with BOS therapy

Treatment with BOS therapy is able to regulate the manifestations of nervousness in patients with prolonged stress. During the procedure, special sensors are placed on the patient's head, and at that moment he is engaged in a special video game. The sensors record the bioelectric activity of the brain and synchronize with the computer controlled by the doctor. The specialist sets special conditions at this moment to improve brain activity and reduce stress through this game.

Group therapy is also provided for families with children with schizophrenia. Specialists are engaged in psychoeducation, they teach parents the correct structure of behavior with children who have this disease. They need to know how to properly support the child and not make his condition worse by their actions. During such sessions, parents share their experiences and collect various symptoms that are important to pay attention to. This is necessary for the treatment of the disease, as parents thus learn to recognize even the most unobvious signs of the disease.

Group therapy is also carried out for children with schizophrenia: it is important for a child at this age to understand that he is not the only person who has a similar problem. Classes with parents can also be conducted in an individual format.

Diagnosis of chronic stress

If you suspect chronic stress, it is important to consult a psychiatrist in time. If necessary, the doctor will give a referral for clinical tests – they are prescribed individually for each patient, depending on his age, medical history and symptoms. With the help of a clinical and psychological examination, specialists will identify the degree of chronic stress.

Various scales are used for this purpose: they determine the level of anxiety about one's own health and the presence of distress, panic attacks and their frequency, and evaluate the patient's personal qualities that can help prevent stress or, conversely, provoke it. In the future, thanks to this data, doctors will be able to track the dynamics of treatment and additionally identify “targets" for exposure.

During the treatment, the patient will visit a psychotherapist and a psychologist, and the first three sessions will also be diagnostic in nature.
