Snoring
Causes of snoring
The causes of snoring can be different, for example:
- features of human anatomical structure,
- deformity and poor ventilation in the nasal cavity,
- abnormalities in the development of the mandible,
- malocclusion,
- overweight,
- lack of sleep,
- fatigue,
- smoking,
- alcohol intake, etc .
Snoring can be a symptom of serious medical conditions that require medical attention. One of the most dangerous types of snoring is sleep apnea, a sudden and prolonged respiratory arrest. The treatment of sleep apnea is one of the areas of work of EMC ENT doctors.

Treatment of snoring in men and women in EMC
- soft palate diathermy;
- surgical interventions (septoplasty, diathermy of nasal concha, removal of tonsils);
- installation of a jaw splint (orthosis).
Soft palate diathermy
The principle of the diathermy method is to use high-frequency electric currents that help strengthen the weak walls of the palate, thereby reducing their predisposition to vibration during sleep.
The diathermy method is successfully used in the treatment of snoring in Western European countries. This technique is painless and gives a successful result in 91% of cases (in other cases, surgical intervention may be suggested).
Soft palate diathermy in EMC is performed during consultation under local anesthesia. Within one minute, the doctor conducts three short sessions of 20 seconds each. The effectiveness of the method can be assessed in a few weeks, which is the time required for changes in the structure of the soft palate wall to occur.
Installation of a jaw splint (orthosis)
The jaw splint (orthosis) pushes the lower jaw forward, which widens the lumen in the larynx and, consequently, reduces snoring. The patient is asked to wear an orthosis at night, and the orthosis is removed in the morning.The EMC uses the latest generation of orthoses, the O.R.M.® Device from Laboratoires Narval, which are manufactured individually for each patient. The O.R.M.® Device has passed clinical trials on 108 patients in Western Europe and has shown excellent effectiveness:
- reduction of snoring in 80% cases;
- reduction by 60% of short–term respiratory arrest during sleep - obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.
In addition, the orthosis is very convenient to use: it is invisible, unlike most similar jaw splints, it is thinner and lighter, does not put pressure on the teeth, and therefore does not disrupt speech. Today it is the most effective and convenient method of non-surgical treatment of snoring.
