Fracture of the tibia of the diaphysis

Fracture of the tibial diaphysis is a common injury among all fractures of the long bones. Cases of open fractures are a serious problem, and they account for almost a quarter of the total number - this is due to the location of the anteromedial surface of the tibia: with a fracture, the probability of rupture of the skin is high.  Open fractures are the main danger: they have a high risk of infection and infection in the wound.

It is in connection with the risk of infection in case of fracture of the tibial diaphysis that it is necessary first of all to examine the victim. The doctor will certainly find out if the patient has been vaccinated against tetanus and check if the vessels are damaged. In case of doubt, the patient is referred for angiography, a contrast X-ray examination of blood vessels.

Surgical treatment and removal of non-viable tissues in the fracture area should be performed as soon as possible. Undetected contamination and tissue necrosis can permanently stall the healing and fusion process, so it is very important to carry out all measures related to the prevention of infection on time. As soon as possible after an injury, prevention with antibiotics should begin; it is advisable that the victim receive them in the first three hours.

If there are enough viable soft tissues left, it is possible to perform immediate primary wound closure, which significantly reduces the risk of nosocomial infection. If it is impossible to close the wound with your own tissues, special ones are used for these purposes.

Thus, in case of fracture of the tibial diaphysis, the decisive role is played by how quickly disinfecting and disinfecting measures will be taken and how competently the surgeon will behave. During the treatment period, it is recommended to stop smoking, because it can slow down the healing process.
