Treatment of urethritis
What is urethritis
Urethritis is an inflammatory disease of the urethra. With timely treatment by a specialist, it is treated easily and without complications. The lack of proper treatment leads to the spread of the inflammatory process and infectious damage to the overlying parts of the genitourinary system.
Prolonged chronic or acute urethritis caused by gonorrheal infection can cause the formation of urethral strictures (narrowing of the urethra). In some cases, this leads to severe urinary disorders and requires reconstructive surgery. At the EMC Urological Clinic, we use the most modern methods of diagnosis and treatment of urethritis to keep you healthy.
Causes of urethritis
In the vast majority of cases, the causes of urethritis are viruses and bacteria that infect the walls of the urethra. This most often occurs when infected with sexually transmitted infections (STIs). In men, it can also develop against the background of chronic balanoposthitis (inflammation of the glans and skin of the foreskin of the penis) or cicatricial phimosis.
Much less often, microbes are introduced into the urethra through blood and lymphatic vessels from the foci of inflammation of the above organs in the body, for example, tonsils with tonsillitis or caries. In isolated cases, urethritis may be the result of allergic reactions.
Symptoms of urethritis
Urethritis is characterized by an acute onset and is manifested by various symptoms. These include a feeling of itching or discomfort in the urethra, pain and pain when urinating, unpleasant discharge from the urethra, redness and sticking of the edges of its external opening.
In some cases, the pronounced symptoms of urethritis may subside after a few days. This should not be considered a recovery. Most likely, the infection has spread deeper and can cause serious harm to health. At the first signs of urethritis, you should immediately consult a doctor.
Diagnostic methods
Diagnosis of urethritis, in addition to external examination and detailed medical history collection, includes various types of laboratory tests: urinalysis, PCR diagnostics, seeding for various types of bacteria and fungi to determine the sensitivity of pathogens to antibacterial drugs. In some cases, blood tests are performed for the presence of antibodies to various types of STIs.
In case of complications of urethritis that cause urination disorders, special instrumental diagnostic methods are used: uroflowmetry (examination of the process of normal urination by an instrument), urethroscopy (visual examination of the urethra using endoscopic equipment) and urethragraphy (X-ray examination of the urethra performed against the background of the introduction of a special contrast agent into the urethra).
Treatment of urethritis
It is important to understand that urethritis does not go away on its own, so it is very important to consult a specialist. The EMC Urological Clinic performs all types of diagnostic studies of any diseases of the urethra, as well as uses all methods of conservative and surgical treatment.
First, you need to identify the infection that caused the urethritis. Therefore, a thorough diagnosis is carried out. Then a treatment regimen is prescribed, aimed at eliminating the infection and restoring the walls of the urethra. Most often, antibiotics and auxiliaries are selected to help avoid side effects from medications. If necessary, physiotherapy procedures can be prescribed.
