Awards
The winner Awards of the Government of the Russian Federation in the field of science and technology for 2007 "For the introduction of liver transplantation as a radical method of treating severe liver diseases in adults and children - the creation of a new direction in medicine."
Winner of the Moscow City Prize for 2010 in the field of medicine.
Winner of the Russian Federation Prize in Science and Technology in 2013 for the development and implementation of innovative technologies for the treatment of liver and pancreatic tumors using domestic cryosurgical equipment.
Scientific activity
His research interests include hepatopancreatobiliary surgery, emergency surgery of the liver and pancreas, cryosurgery, and blood-saving technologies in surgery.
He is the author of more than 500 publications, one of the authors of the monograph "Liver Surgery", the interactive multimedia Atlas of Surgical Pancreatology, as well as the monograph of the same name. He wrote chapters in the Atlas of Oncological Operations, The Guide to Hepatology, and Liver Transplantation.
Under the supervision of A.V. Zhao, 8 PhD theses and 4 doctoral theses were defended. He is the author of 6 patents for the invention of relatively long-term prognosis of colon cancer metastases in the liver, cholangiocellular cancer, as well as cryodestruction techniques.
Since 2008, he has been Vice-President of the Interregional Organization of the Society of Transplantologists, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the journal Transplantology, member of the Editorial Board of the journals Oncosurgery, Bulletin of Transplantology, Evidence-based Gastroenterology. In 2013, he founded and has since served as editor-in-chief of the journal High-Tech Medicine.

Experience and education
In 1996, he completed an internship in surgery and liver transplantation at the Clinic of Abdominal and Vascular Surgery in Hanover (Germany) under Prof. R. Pichlmeier.
In 2000, he completed an internship in liver surgery and transplantation at At the Royal Hospital in London (Great Britain) under Professor N. Heaton.
In 2004, he completed an internship at the Department of Oncology of the I.M. Sechenov Moscow State Medical Academy, after which he was awarded the specialty of oncologist.
From 1983 to 1991, he worked as a surgeon at GKB No. 15. Since 1987, he began to serve as a responsible duty surgeon at GKB No. 15. In 1991, he defended his PhD thesis on the topic "Comprehensive treatment of patients with severe forms of obstructive jaundice." In 1992, the first qualification category was awarded.
Since 1992, he has worked as an assistant at the Department of Hospital Surgery No. 1 at the 2nd Moscow Medical University.
In May 1994, he joined the Vishnevsky Institute of Surgery as a senior researcher in the Department of Abdominal Surgery.
In 1997, he was awarded the highest qualification category in surgery.
In June 1999, he defended his doctoral thesis on the topic: “Tumors of the liver and proximal bile ducts. Diagnosis and treatment”.
In April 1999, he founded the liver transplantation program at the N.V. Sklifosovsky Research Institute of Joint Venture. Until February 2011, he was the head of the Moscow City Liver Transplantation Center at the N.V. Sklifosovsky Research Institute of Joint Venture.
From 2007 to 2011, in addition to leading the Liver Transplantation Center, he headed the Department of Acute Surgical Diseases of the Liver and Pancreas at the N.V.Sklifosovsky Research Institute of Joint Venture.
From 2000 to 2011, 178 cadaveric orthotopic liver allotransplantations were performed in the liver transplantation department with the direct participation of Zhao A.V., which represented at that time the greatest experience of such surgical interventions in Russia and the CIS countries.
In 2002, he confirmed the highest qualification category in surgery.
From 2005 to 2015, he was a professor at the Department of Hospital Surgery at Moscow Classical University, and since 2008, he has been a professor at the Department of Transplantology and Artificial Organs at Moscow State Medical University.
From 2011 to 2020, Deputy Director for Scientific Work at the Vishnevsky Institute of Surgery of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, at the same time headed the Department of Abdominal Surgery (surgery of the liver, biliary tract and pancreas, surgical gastroenterology).
Since 2020, he has been the Head of the Oncological Department of Surgical Treatment at the Vishnevsky National Research Medical Center of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation.
