At the end of the working day in A 74-year-old patient was admitted to the Traumatology and Orthopaedics Clinic with a suspected hip fracture.
After the X—ray, it turned out that the patient had a transversal fracture, an injury in the upper part of the femur. This is a more favorable option, such fractures can heal themselves in 3-4 months of bed rest. But, given the patient's age, conservative treatment was not even considered. For the elderly, prolonged immobility can lead to deadly complications.
At 17:00, the nature of the fracture was determined, and preoperative preparation began. All the necessary implants for osteosynthesis were available, and the operation was successful. Already at 21:00, the duty team submitted a report, and the entire process from diagnosis to completion of the operation took only 3.5 hours.
Andrey Kardanov, MD, Head of the Department of Traumatology and Orthopedics, explains the advantages of such an operational approach.:
"Anyone needs to be put on their feet as quickly as possible, especially the elderly. This method of bone fixation allows the patient to walk with a full load on her leg the very next day, without waiting for the fracture to completely heal. Crutches are necessary for confidence and stability, but the patient can walk on her own feet. The operation is performed through a small incision of 3-4 centimeters, which eliminates intraoperative blood loss, leaving only a small hematoma in the fracture area. This means that special rehabilitation is not required, and many patients do not even have time to realize what has happened, as they are already at home. It sounds like a fantasy, but in a modern high-tech clinic, it's a reality."
