Retinal angiography

Retinal angiography helps in the diagnosis of the following pathologies of the vascular system of the eye:
-
Tumors
-
Presence of microaneurysms and aneurysms
-
An inflammatory process or swelling in the retina
-
Retinal artery or vein occlusion
-
Hemangioma
-
Neovascularization
Doctors of other specialties can also give a referral for angiography: neurologists, internists, cardiologists, since during the procedure the doctor can assess the condition of the vessels of the head.
TYPES OF ANGIOGRAPHY
The classic type of angiography is fluorescence angiography (PHAG), when a contrast agent, fluorescein, is used to visualize blood vessels. After the injection, the ophthalmologist monitors the contrast distribution through video or photography.
A more modern method is OCT angiography, which helps an ophthalmologist evaluate the vessels of the retina and optic nerve without contrast agent injection. Ophthalmologists at the EMC perform OCT angiography.
ADVANTAGES OF RETINAL OCT ANGIOGRAPHY OVER PHAG
The main advantage is security. When performing PHAG, the doctor injects fluorescein intravenously, which in some patients can cause allergic reactions up to anaphylactic shock.
OCT angiography has no contraindications, it can be performed for children, the elderly, and patients with allergic reactions.
OCT angiography is recommended to be performed annually for preventive purposes. This is especially true for patients at risk.:
-
with diabetes mellitus;
-
hypertension;
-
with a history of stroke and myocardial infarction and other vascular pathologies.
This study will identify problems, including the risk of hemorrhages, which can lead to a sharp and significant decrease in vision.
ADVANTAGES OF CONTACTING THE EMC
