IVF with donor sperm

IVF with donor sperm can be performed due to the absence of spermatozoa in the husband's sperm or in cases where the woman does not have a sexual partner.

Learn more about the indications for IVF with donor sperm:

  • Genetic diseases in the husband that do not allow the spouse to give birth to a healthy child
  • Absence of spermatozoa or very poor quality spermatozoa
  • Other diseases of the spouse that cause male factor infertility
  • The woman has no partner.

How IVF is performed with donor sperm

In vitro fertilization with donor sperm is performed exactly like conventional IVF. The only difference is that embryologists do not work with the sperm of a spouse, but of a donor.

First, if necessary, reproductologists perform ovulation stimulation with hormonal drugs. Various options are available in the EMC: minimal IVF, double stimulation IVF, natural cycle IVF, standard protocols.
Then reproductologists receive the woman's follicles, and embryologists carry out further fertilization of male and female germ cells in the laboratory. The donor's sperm is thawed an hour and a half before fertilization.
Next, the embryos grow and are further implanted into the patient's uterine cavity. Usually 1 embryo is transferred. If more than 1 embryo is obtained as a result of cultivation, others may be frozen.
After the embryo has entered the uterine cavity of the expectant mother, reproductologists perform supportive hormone therapy and monitor how the embryo takes root.
Donor sperm can be used not only in the standard IVF program, but also for intrauterine insemination.

Is the donor's sperm safe?

Donor sperm is absolutely safe. At the EMC, we accept sperm only from healthy men who:
  • they have the opinions of a therapist, urologist, and psychiatrist;
  • tested for blood type, Rh factor, HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and C;
  • medical, genetic, cytogenetic, and sexually transmitted infections have been tested.
  • We use sperm only from those donors who have negative results for HIV, hepatitis B and C and syphilis 6 months after donation (only after that the dose of sperm is released from quarantine)
In addition, donors must be at least 18 and no older than 35 years old, without hereditary pathology and pronounced external defects.

How to choose a donor?

The EMC Clinic for Reproductive and Prenatal Medicine has its own sperm donor bank.
You can choose a donor based on questionnaires, from which you can learn about the preferences and hobbies of a man. Baby photos of donors are attached to the questionnaires. In all other matters, we strictly observe the principle of confidentiality both with respect to the donor and with respect to future parents.
A friend or relative of the patients can also act as a donor if they meet all the above requirements.
