Fusion biopsy
The only reliable method to confirm the presence or absence of cancer cells is a prostate biopsy.
A prostate biopsy is a diagnostic method in which samples of prostate tissue are taken for analysis in the laboratory using a microscope. This method can not only confirm the presence of cancer cells, but also clarify the stage of the disease, which is important for further treatment.
A high-quality biopsy ensures the reliability of the results and is the "moment of truth" in choosing the tactics of prostate cancer treatment.
Prostate biopsies performed under the control of finger-rectal examination or ultrasound often "miss" the neoplasm in the prostate, so they are often called "blind" or "random biopsies" due to the fact that the focus of pathological changes is located in a hard-to-reach place for the passage of the ultrasound sensor and biopsy needle.
To improve the effectiveness of prostate cancer diagnosis, especially in patients with negative biopsies and a history of elevated PSA, a new high–precision method was proposed - targeted prostate biopsy, after preliminary combination of MRI and ultrasound images of the prostate gland on the ultrasound machine screen, or Fusion Biopsy of the prostate /p>
Fusion biopsy allows you to get accurate results and create the most effective treatment plan for prostate cancer.
In some cases, prostate cancer may be latent (for example, if it is localized in the anterior part of the prostate), it is difficult to detect it using transrectal ultrasound and it is difficult to obtain samples from the pathological area using a biopsy needle. This area was practically unexplored before the advent of magnetic resonance multiparametric tomography (MRI) of the prostate.
Fusion biopsy or biopsy under combined MRI-ultrasound control is an alternative to a standard biopsy. It allows the urologist to perform a biopsy on areas of the prostate with an increased risk of cancer that are not obvious with isolated ULTRASOUND control. This method is more effective and diagnoses neoplasms that were overlooked during a traditional biopsy.
Prostate fusion biopsy procedure at the European Medical Center
- Magnetic resonance imaging of the prostate is performed, where suspicious foci in the prostate gland are detected, including indirect signs of malignancy of each identified area. At the EMC, this study is performed on a new generation "Aero" Siemens device (1.5 tesla), which determines the formation of even a very small size as quickly as possible and significantly reduces the study time.
- The second stage is fusion biopsy. A pre-ultrasound scan is performed, then with the help of special equipment and software, the data of the MRI examination of the prostate is synchronized with the ultrasound image obtained. The ULTRASOUND/MRI fusion pattern allows you to obtain a three-dimensional image of the prostate with a clear marking of suspicious areas. Due to this, the urologist accurately collects pathological samples even in the most inaccessible areas of the prostate gland.
The biopsy is performed under local anesthesia and does not require hospitalization.
Advantages of fusion biopsy at the European Medical Center
- The study allows you to make an accurate diagnosis without conducting repeated studies.
- Fusion biopsy reduces the number of tissue sampling points, which significantly reduces the risk of complications associated with prostate biopsy.
- Fusion biopsy allows to identify clinically significant "aggressive" forms of cancer.
- Fusion biopsy avoids overdiagnosis and hypertreatment.
- Thanks to fusion biopsy, it is possible to use focal "focal" therapy for tumor areas in the prostate gland.
The EMC contains all the most modern methods for the early diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer: in patients with borderline PSA values, we measure the prostate health index, perform a multiparametric MRI according to Pi-RADS criteria, and perform a fusion biopsy of the prostate when a pathological focus is detected. And when prostate cancer is detected in the EMC, it is possible to perform a radial prostatectomy using a Da Vinci surgical robot.
The EMC Urological Clinic currently offers the most accurate and up-to-date method for diagnosing prostate cancer.
AN ACCURATE DIAGNOSIS IS THE KEY TO EFFECTIVE TREATMENT.
