COVID-19 treatment at home
EMC specialists have accumulated extensive experience in treating COVID-19 at home, in most cases they manage to do without hospitalization.
How is home treatment performed?
Doctors go to the patient's home, where they examine the patient, take tests, and prescribe medications.
The patient is constantly in contact with the attending physician to monitor the condition. Both face-to-face consultations with home visits and remote consultations are conducted, including monitoring using devices for remote diagnostics.
The actions of medical personnel in the treatment of coronavirus infection are primarily aimed at preventing the most dangerous complications:
- formation of blood clots
- attachment of bacterial and other infections
- development of a cytokine storm — an inadequate hyperimmune response to infection
For these purposes, three main classes of drugs are used: anticoagulants to prevent the formation of blood clots and microthrombi, antibiotics to prevent the development of bacterial infection, and drugs that block the hyperresponse of the immune system: corticosteroids, in some cases interleukin-6 blockers .
Several parameters are crucial for assessing the patient's condition:
- General well-being and temperature
- General blood test
- C-reactive protein
- Ferritin
- D-dimer
Fever, muscle and joint aches, headache, and feeling worse usually outpace changes in lung tests and CT scans. A persistent increase in temperature from 38 °C and above signals that it is time to switch from symptomatic treatment to prescribing medications to prevent complications. At this point, it is imperative to consult a doctor and start treatment.
