Urgent round-the-clock proctological care at the EMC
In their daily work, doctors of the proctology department encounter a number of proctological diseases and conditions that require urgent medical intervention. If surgical or therapeutic care is not provided to such patients in time, this can lead to serious consequences.
The most common reason for seeking urgent proctological care is purulent-inflammatory diseases of both the perineum (coccyx cyst, acute paraproctitis, acute thrombosis of external hemorrhoids) and the intestine (acute diverticulitis, acute intestinal obstruction, foreign bodies in the rectum). Such conditions require the help of a proctologist surgeon, since an operation for, for example, purulent-inflammatory disease of the anorectal zone, not performed in full, can cause a relapse or lead to a malfunction of the anal sphincter.
Let's consider the most common urgent diseases in the practice of a coloproctologist.
1. Acute thrombosis of external hemorrhoids. Patients usually complain of acute pain in the anus, which increases with movement. An operation to remove a blood clot or excision of the thrombosed node itself is performed if the time from the onset of the disease is no more than 48-72 hours and the patient experiences unbearable pain. In cases where more time has passed, the pain syndrome usually decreases significantly, and the patient is prescribed conservative therapy.
2. Suppuration of coccyx cyst. A coccyx cyst (epithelial coccygeal passage) is a cavity lined with epithelium under the skin in the upper part of the intercostal fold, which is usually a birth defect. It becomes inflamed when a bacterial infection enters through skin damage or injury to the coccyx. Increasing pain, an increase in body temperature and skin in the coccyx area is a reason to urgently consult a doctor.
Significant changes have taken place in the surgery of a suppurated coccyx cyst: radical operations, after which the patient was forbidden to sit for a long time, were replaced by techniques preferred by surgeons of the world's leading coloproctology clinics. In the acute period of the disease, doctors at the Coloproctology Clinic drain the cyst on an outpatient basis using the Bascom method, after the procedure there is no need to immobilize the patient.
3. Acute paraproctitis is an inflammation of the pararectal fiber, the tissue surrounding the rectum. The condition requires the opening and drainage of the abscess, excision of the affected tissue. The operation should be performed within the next few hours after diagnosis in order to prevent the spread of the purulent process through the pelvic tissue.
4. Diseases of the colon: acute diverticulitis, Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, oncological diseases. This may be an initial attack of the disease, a recurrence of the disease, or complications in the form of bleeding, intestinal perforation, or intestinal obstruction. In any case, patients with complications of these diseases, when symptoms of an "acute abdomen" appear, require urgent hospitalization and, in some cases, emergency surgery, which is preferably performed in a specialized coloproctological hospital.
5. Foreign bodies in the rectum. The appearance of foreign bodies in the rectum is most often associated with independent medical procedures (syringes, enema tips, tubes of ointments), as well as intimate games. Removing these objects can be very difficult: manipulations are most often performed under anesthesia manually or using surgical instruments and devices, depending on how far the object has penetrated into the intestine (located in the rectum or reached the sigmoid). It is important to understand that only a doctor can remove a foreign body! You should not try to do this yourself.: This can lead to damage to the anal sphincter and rectum. You should not delay seeking medical help in the hope that the subject will come out on its own.: This can cause serious complications such as bleeding, inflammation of the intestine and surrounding fiber, intestinal obstruction, and intestinal perforation with the development of peritonitis. Sometimes it is necessary to perform abdominal surgery and form a colostomy.
EMC coloproctologists strongly recommend that you urgently seek medical help if you experience the following symptoms:
- Increasing pain in the rectum, perineum, anus and coccyx
- Intestinal disorders accompanied by pain in the pelvis and perineum and fever
- Acute pain during bowel movement
- Prolonged constipation accompanied by painful urge to defecate
- Bleeding from the rectum
- Acute abdominal pain with earlier diagnoses: diverticular disease, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease
- Traumatic injury to the perineum, anal sphincter, rectum and colon. Emergency proctological care at the EMC is provided around the clock.
