In proctology, there are 4 studies of the rectum and anal canal:

1. Classical anoscopy (examination of the anal canal with an open-contour endoscope). Anoscopy is included in the price of the consultation and does not require anesthesia.

2. High-resolution anoscopy to detect dysplasia (precancerous mucosal changes) of the anal canal in papillomavirus infection.

3. Rectoromanoscopy is an examination of the rectal mucosa to detect polyps, hemorrhoids, and other pathologies. Preparation for the study is intestinal cleansing (enema). An enema is preferable to an aqueous one, since water does not burn the mucous membrane, unlike microlax. During the examination, the doctor may perform a biopsy or remove a polyp. Usually, rectoromanoscopy in young people is self-sufficient. In middle and old age, colonoscopy or MSCT of the abdominal and pelvic organs with contrast should be supplemented.

4. Proctoscopy - allows a comprehensive assessment of the rectum and sampling of tests. It is conducted without preparation. It shows the true condition of the rectum and mucosa, its characteristic contents (without enemas or laxatives), allows you to assess the presence of inflammation of the mucosa, polyps, take a stool analysis and a smear for infections.

According to the standard, a consultation with a proctologist is always accompanied by an endoscopy of the rectum. It is recommended to come to the initial consultation with a proctologist on an empty stomach (do not drink or eat) in order to simultaneously perform blood, abdominal and pelvic examinations, if necessary. It is also better to discuss the preparation for the initial examination in advance with the doctor who will advise. The doctor will give personal recommendations depending on the specific situation.
