Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) is a bacterium that can cause the development of sinusitis, otitis media, pneumonia, meningitis, osteomyelitis, arthritis, sepsis and other diseases. The infection is most dangerous for young children and the elderly. The resistance of pneumococcus to antibiotics is increasing, and it is becoming more difficult to treat the infection. Sometimes asymptomatic carriage of these bacteria is possible, while the threat of infection through contact with pneumococcal carriers persists.
Why vaccinate?
