The birth of twins is a double joy for parents. But, alas, the course of multiple pregnancies can be seriously complicated. Cases are considered especially difficult if the expectant mother has concomitant diseases. This was the case with our patient.
She came to us at 15 weeks for further management of pregnancy and childbirth. I am happy that, finally, after long attempts to get pregnant, it was possible with the help of IVF and the fact that two babies will be born at once – a daughter and a son. And she was upset because, as they said in another clinic, where she had previously been pregnant, the situation was very difficult and it was impossible to predict anything.
The specialists of the EMC maternity hospital confirmed the difficult situation. Firstly, future babies developed from the same placenta – these are always big risks. Secondly, the pregnant woman was found to have arterial hypertension, edema, uneven fetal development, multiple uterine fibroids, gestational diabetes, and the risk of developing preeclampsia. But our specialists were more optimistic in their forecasts: during their practice, they had to manage pregnancies more than once and successfully deliver even more difficult births. Therefore, they encouraged the expectant mother - the attitude of a pregnant woman is very important.
To reduce the risks, obstetricians and gynecologists began immediate therapy. As a result, they managed to normalize sugar, take control of blood pressure and avoid the development of preeclampsia – all this helped to prevent early delivery. The specialists conducted a COP at 36 weeks, which is considered a very good indicator in a particular situation.
After the birth of the babies, the doctors immediately removed the patient's multiple fibroids, thus saving the woman from having to consult a gynecologist for surgery in the future.
Mom was glad: it would seem that everything was over. But the worries were still ahead. The girl, as is often the case with the birth of twins, turned out to be underweight - 2140 grams. But her condition did not suffer, and she was observed in the conditions of the neonatal physiology department.
The boy was born weighing 2840g, but he was much weaker than his sister. From the moment of birth, the child had breathing problems, so the baby was placed in the intensive care unit and connected to a ventilator.
Despite the condition, both children received breast milk from the first day of life.
After the examination, the boy was diagnosed with congenital pneumonia, congenital anemia and transient myocardial ischemia. Neonatologists, intensive care specialists and EMC cardiologists constantly monitored the baby and provided him with all necessary assistance.
Our maternity hospital provides for parents and children to stay together, even if they are in the intensive care unit. That's why Mom was with her babies all the time.
A week later, the girl gained the necessary weight, and the doctors allowed her to be discharged. But it was very important for mom to be with her son, so she decided to stay at the hospital until the boy was discharged. During these 7 days, the newborn's condition improved, and further follow-up was carried out in the Neonatal Pathology department of the EMC Maternity hospital.
In the second week, the baby gained weight to normal, his life was not in danger, so the specialists finally allowed the parents to take the child home. Now the family is doing well, the children are growing and developing properly.
Thanks to the experienced doctors of the EMC maternity hospital, their quick actions now mom can be calm: the worst is over. Her twins have a full and hopefully happy life ahead of them. We wish this wonderful family good health and all the best.
