Often, additional immunotherapy or chemotherapy is prescribed to increase the effectiveness of treatment after surgery, when medications are injected directly into the bladder.
In the EMC Urology department, we actively use intravesical BCG therapy on an outpatient basis for the treatment of bladder cancer. This is a variant of immunotherapy, in which a special urological BCG vaccine, acting on the bladder wall, activates the body's own forces to fight cancer cells. This is a globally recognized highly effective therapy that even avoids surgery for certain types of bladder cancer. We also use intravesical chemotherapy in a certain category of patients, which is not accompanied by general systemic side effects.
