Getting ready for school – recommendations from a pediatric orthopedist

September 1st is coming soon! The children will go to school, and it will be an interesting and challenging time. It is difficult because the load increases not only on the child's intelligence, but also the effect on his physical condition. Children will spend much more time in a forced position – sitting at a table. First the lessons at school, then the homework. By the end of the school year, a string of parents will take their children to an orthopedic doctor with a single complaint: "He's slouching so much! What should we do?"

It is very important to prepare for school, not only by teaching a child to write, read, and count. It is important to prepare him physically. Have you done exercises with him, forming muscles that support your posture and help you withstand school loads? Have you taught your child how to sit properly? Parents often say at the reception, "He's hooked. You should have seen how he sits, where his legs are! At school, they don't always control whether the child is sitting properly at the desk!"

If you initially lay down the rules of behavior at the dining table in the child and teach him how to sit properly at the desk, then he will not need outside observers. Habit will take its toll. Don't you explain the rules of social behavior to children? And it is unlikely that any of them will do unacceptable things in a public place. It's the same with the correct position or sitting at the table – trying to fall apart at the desk, the child will remember that it's indecent to sit like that and will sit up straight.

Do not allow children to read during lunch! This not only creates an incorrect stereotype of the position at the table, but also disrupts digestion.

Improperly selected furniture is the next reason for the appearance or intensification of slouching. A child can sit incorrectly just because he is uncomfortable!  Let's consider the rules for choosing furniture for children.

It is necessary to sit at a table or desk smoothly, leaning against the back of a chair. Do not allow the child to lean towards the table. If this is unavoidable, then it is necessary to purchase a table that can adjust the tilt of the tabletop. The soles of the feet must necessarily be on the floor. If you can't reach the floor, use footrests.

In parallel with the selection of furniture, we are engaged in the prevention of another cause of posture disorders – prolonged sitting in a stationary state. At school, the child sits for 45 minutes, followed by a break. And when he comes home, he sits down for lessons and often does not get up for hours. It is recommended to change the body position more often. I sat down, then I can get up and continue my lessons standing up. It's not for nothing that people used to write standing at the bureau or desks. Moreover, the load on the spine is less when standing than when sitting. And if the child still does not have the habit of sitting properly, then getting up, he will relieve his back. The second option is to remove the chair and sit on the fitball! It's a wonderful device – you can not only sit, but also do a million different exercises, and for the whole family, starting with babies and ending with parents.

In addition to the fitball, there is a "dancing chair" that forces the child to be in good shape all the time, sitting on it, due to its unstable surface.

Be sure to pay attention to the satchel or bag that your child carries to school. Considering how much you need to carry, a backpack should be comfortable. A school satchel or backpack should be light when empty.

The backpack should fit snugly to the back. Do not allow it to deviate from the upper back. The straps of the backpack should be adjusted so that the bottom of the backpack is located on the lower back, and not in the pelvic area. And it is necessary to carry a backpack on two shoulders.

But the most important thing for correcting and shaping posture will not even be all of the above, but symmetrically developed MUSCLES. Because it is the muscles that surround the spine and keep it in the correct position. It is necessary to strengthen muscles from birth, and not just before school.

Nevertheless, it's never too late to form your posture. The main thing is to do it with pleasure, to add elements of the game, to create in the child an interest in this fascinating, but not an easy task.

The orthopedic doctor at our clinic will examine the child, determine if there are any postural disorders, and draw up, if necessary, an optimal set of rehabilitation measures. In our clinic, children can learn how to perform exercises that form their posture correctly, as well as take a treatment course at rehabilitation department.
