Kareem Tirsi, a urologist and andrologist at the European Medical Center, a member of the European Society of Urology and the American Society of Andrologists, a member of the American Association for Basic Research in Urology, PhD, participated in a round table organized by the Beauty & Health magazine.
The topic of the meeting was "Male infertility". Together with Dr. Tirsi, Evgeny Efremov, MD, Member of the Board of the Russian Society of Urology, Head of the Department of Andrology and Human Reproduction at the Research Institute of Urology, and Professor Kalinchenko, MD, PhD, andrologist and endocrinologist at the Clinic for Men's Health and Longevity of a Married Couple, Zukhra Pavlova, PhD, took part in the discussion.
The round table discussed the prevention of male infertility, the causes of its development, as well as modern treatment methods.
In Russia, according to various sources, 15-20% of marriages are infertile, and this number is not decreasing. According to WHO criteria, the figure of 15% is demographically dangerous and is considered a serious health problem requiring a change in the demographic policy of the state. At the moment, there is a tendency to increase the male factor of infertility: today, male reproductive dysfunction accounts for about 50% of the causes of infertility in a couple, while the female factor has been stable over the past three decades and remains around 30%.;
Despite these indicators, men and women have completely different approaches to solving the problem of the inability to conceive. Women, having learned about the diagnosis of infertility, try to find out and try all possible ways of treatment. Most men, however, refuse to acknowledge the problem due to excessive self-esteem. Many of them believe that if an erection occurs without problems, then everything is fine with fertility.
At the same time, if a married couple does not become pregnant during regular sexual intercourse (at least 2-3 times a week), ending with vaginal ejaculation, without protection, this is the first reason to consult a specialist. Both spouses should be examined.
The participants of the round table noted that men should not despair if it turns out that they are the cause of infertility. The possibilities of modern medicine make it possible to solve this problem in 90% of men who encounter it.
Today, Russia has all the possibilities for modern treatment of male infertility – both conservative (medical) and radical – for example, surgical operations for inguinal hernias, varicocele, ICSI method (intracytoplasmic sperm injection - the introduction of a sperm cell with the thinnest microneedle into the egg for the purpose of its fertilization).
Very often, a banal lifestyle change significantly improves spermogram indicators – correction of excess body weight, exclusion of excess sugars and alcohol from the diet, and relief of metabolic syndrome.
Summing up the results of the round table, experts concluded that male infertility is not a verdict. There are practically no unsolvable situations in this area today. The main thing is a man's desire and psycho–emotional readiness to become a father. After all, as Dr. Tirsi noted, "The birth of a child is only the beginning of the path of fatherhood, and the main part of it is education."
