Many parents are interested in the topic of child circumcision. Some are convinced of its necessity, others doubt its usefulness.
What is circumcision, why and at what age is it performed on boys, how is it performed and what is the care of the child after the procedure?
Circumcision, or circumcision is the surgical excision of the foreskin of the male penis. The operation can be performed in men at any age.
WHY IS CIRCUMCISION CONDUCTED
Circumcision is performed for medical or religious reasons.
Medical indications:
-
Phimosis. With phimosis, the opening of the foreskin is narrowed, which makes it impossible to expose the glans penis. Symptoms of phimosis are swelling of the foreskin during urination, weak urine flow and retention, and a tendency to inflammation and infections.
-
Balanit. Young boys often have balanitis, an inflammation of the glans penis and foreskin (balanoposthitis). The disease is characterized by redness and swelling of the foreskin, pain when urinating, and purulent discharge. A doctor may recommend circumcision if the disease recurs frequently.
HOW TO CROP
-
First, the child is anesthetized. Usually, circumcision is performed under general anesthesia and additionally local anesthesia is used.
-
The surgeon then removes the foreskin around the glans penis with a scalpel. In this case, a special clip is used to protect the head of the penis from accidental damage.
-
Stopping bleeding by suturing with absorbable threads.
-
Applying a blindfold.
The whole procedure takes no more than 15-20 minutes.
HOW TO PREPARE FOR CIRCUMCISION
Like any operation, circumcision is performed after examination and the exclusion of contraindications. For example, a child should not be circumcised if he was born prematurely or has a malaise or problems with blood clotting.
HOW TO TAKE CARE OF A CHILD AFTER CIRCUMCISION
On the first day after surgery, the patient may experience some pain, and restless sleep is possible. In this case, the doctor may prescribe painkillers for the child.
Swelling in the area of surgery and a slight leakage of blood after circumcision is normal. The swelling will completely disappear after 7-10 days, but the general well-being of the small patient will improve after 3-4 days.
During this time, follow-up with a doctor is necessary. After removing the bandage, hygiene should be especially carefully monitored.
WHO DOES THE CIRCUMCISION
In the EMC, circumcision is performed by a pediatric surgeon or a pediatric urologist.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF CIRCUMCISION
Complications after surgery are minimized, but not excluded, provided the doctor is highly professional.
Approximately 2 out of 100 children may experience minor bleeding after surgery. This problem is of a short-term nature. You should immediately consult a doctor if the wound does not heal for a long time or the child has a fever.
IS IT WORTH CIRCUMCISING A CHILD
Doctors' views on circumcision vary. Some consider circumcision as an important measure in the prevention of diseases and recommend it. Others view it as devoid of scientific justification and suggest doing it only if it is motivated by religion.
Advantages of circumcision:
-
the procedure reduces the risks of foreskin constriction - phimosis;
-
after the procedure, penile hygiene is greatly simplified;
-
a number of studies have shown that cancer of the foreskin and penis is more common in those who have not undergone circumcision.
In case of a positive decision, the operation should be performed only by an experienced professional surgeon in a reliable and well-established clinic. All conditions have been created in the EMC for the safe circumcision of even the youngest patients.
