A fracture caused by a minor injury is usually the first and only manifestation of osteoporosis. And with falls, the risk of fractures in osteoporosis increases significantly. Therefore, fall prevention is important when monitoring patients with osteoporosis.
Various organs and systems are involved in maintaining balance: the primary organ of balance in the inner ear, vision, the musculoskeletal system, receptors in the joints of the extremities, spine, feet, cerebellum and other structures of the brain. The methods of correcting balance disorders and preventing falls also depend on where the malfunction is detected.
Alexander Shchelukhin, neurologist: "During a neurological examination, we identify potentially weak components of the balance system, draw up a prevention or treatment plan. The neurologist carries out comprehensive monitoring of the patient in the aspect of balance and, if necessary, can involve ophthalmologists (with predominance of visual problems), otolaryngologists-vestibulologists (with predominance of problems with the inner ear).
The main method of fall prevention is vestibular gymnastics, based on the individual characteristics of the patient's balance system. By identifying insufficiently reliable mechanisms, we pay maximum attention to their training or replacement by others. For example, in case of instability associated with a sharp decrease in vision, therapeutic gymnastics is performed, aimed at teaching the patient more effective intuitive use of sensations and signals from the musculoskeletal system. We need to make sure that the balance support system is working effectively to reduce the risk of falls and injury."
The EMC Center for Diagnosis and Treatment of Osteoporosis has neurologists, vestibulologists, ophthalmologists, orthopedic traumatologists, endocrinologists, rheumatologists and other specialists. Doctors work closely together, which allows for a comprehensive assessment of the patient's condition and prevent the development of complications.
The EMC Osteoporosis Diagnosis and Treatment Center is accredited by the International Osteoporosis Foundation. Doctors regularly hold meetings with patients, where they talk about prevention and give recommendations to patients who have already been diagnosed with osteoporosis. The last meeting took place on October 21 and was timed to coincide with the International Osteoporosis Day. Doctors Irina Russ and Anna Bozhkova talked about the dangers of osteoporosis, risk factors, principles of rational nutrition and a healthy lifestyle to prevent the development of osteoporosis.
