According to a new study conducted in the United States, obese patients who undergo bariatric surgery have a significantly reduced risk of developing coronary heart disease (CHD), reports Reuters Health.
"This is another example confirming the effectiveness of bariatric surgery in preventing obesity—related diseases," said study co-author Dr. Emanuel Lo Menzo of the Cleveland Clinic in Weston, Florida. He added that, according to the results of the study, bariatric surgery "can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease by 40% in both women and men. "The results of the study were presented in November 2018 at the Obsityweek conference organized by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and the Society for Obesity (TOS).
The authors of the study observed 225 obese patients (average age 51 years, 67% of them women) without a previous diagnosis of coronary artery disease who underwent bariatric surgery from 2010 to 2016 (65% of patients underwent laparoscopic gastrectomy, 27% underwent gastric bypass surgery, and 2% underwent other operations).
12 months after surgery:
- patients' weight decreased by an average of 27%,
- body mass index — by 69%.
- 40% of patients had diabetes and hypertension
- All patients showed an improvement in LDL and HDL cholesterol levels.
Before surgery, the risk of developing coronary heart disease in patients in the next 10 years was 8.87 on the Framingham scale, which is eight times higher than the standard indicator. One year after surgery, women had a 42% decrease in relative Framingham risk, and men had a 39% decrease.
