Thyroid Surgery

  • Thyroid surgery that leaves no visible scars on the neck
  • An integrated approach to diagnosis and treatment: the surgical procedure is determined jointly with a thyroidologist and an endocrinologist
  • In June 2014, EMC performed a total thyroidectomy using a DaVinci robot for the first time in Russia
According to The American Thyroid Association, about 200 million people, or 3% of the world's population, have some form of thyroid disease. The most common of these are nodular goiter (thyroid nodules), diffuse goiter (enlarged thyroid gland without nodules), and chronic autoimmune thyroiditis. These diseases require mandatory monitoring, and in some cases, medical treatment. Thyroid surgery is performed if conservative therapy is ineffective or if there is a suspicion of malignancy.
In most cases, thyroid diseases are curable, even if partial or complete removal is required.
Surgical treatment of thyroid diseases
thyroid surgeryThe operation can be total (thyroidectomy) or partial (node resection, lobe resection – hemithyroidectomy, or subtotal removal).
Resection of the thyroid gland is usually performed with large (interfering with the patient) nodes or nodes that secrete "excess" hormones. In the vast majority of cases, no further treatment is required after this operation. The remaining part of the thyroid gland completely takes over all functions, and hormonal medications are not required. Over time, thyroid hormones may be needed only for those patients whose thyroid tissue is generally not "able to work" enough, and this usually has nothing to do with the operation performed.
Thyroidectomy is the complete removal of the thyroid gland. Most often, such an intervention is performed by people suffering from thyroid malignancies. After thyroidectomy, patients always need replacement treatment. It boils down to the fact that every morning, shortly before breakfast, the patient needs to take a pill with thyroid hormones identical to his own hormones. This treatment does not lead to weight gain, changes in appearance and figure, does not affect mental and physical abilities, as well as the ability to have children.
HISTOLOGICAL EXAMINATION OF THE NODE DURING SURGERY
The question of exactly how much surgery should be performed is often decided during surgery. If a malignant tumor is suspected, an examination of the already removed tissues is performed during the operation. If the worst suspicions are confirmed, then the entire thyroid gland is removed, if not, the surgeon stops at resection of the gland.
When may surgical treatment of thyroid diseases be necessary?
  • Nodular goiter (if the malignant nature of the formation is suspected or if the node reaches such a size that it begins to interfere with the patient). The possibilities of conservative therapy for this diagnosis are quite limited: contrary to widespread beliefs, iodine preparations and thyroid hormones in most cases cannot "cure" the node.
  • Thyrotoxicosis is an excess of hormones that cannot be treated with medication. Hormone overproduction can occur in the entire thyroid gland tissue at once (diffuse toxic goiter, or Graves' disease), or only in one area (node). Both conditions very often return after conservative therapy, in which case the question arises about the need for surgical intervention.
  • Progressive growth of the thyroid gland.

ADVANTAGES OF MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGERY AT THE EMC CLINIC
ENDOSCOPIC THYROIDECTOMY
surgical treatment of thyroid diseases, thyroid surgery
Surgical procedures are performed through a 2-3 cm wide incision in the neck using microinvasive instruments under the control of an endoscope. Visual control of the procedure is provided by a mini video camera, which is located at the end of the endoscopic instrument. The rehabilitation period after surgery is minimal.
ROBOTIC THYROIDECTOMY
A completely new technology for performing endoscopic surgery using the Da Vinci surgical robot. Three-dimensional visualization and multiple magnification of the surgical field allow surgeons to increase the accuracy of their manipulations. In this case, incisions are made in the armpit or behind the ear, which avoids postoperative scars on visible areas of the neck and face.
The surgical procedure is determined jointly with a thyroidologist and an endocrinologist.
EMC surgeons perform thyroid surgery that leaves no visible scars on the neck. In June 2014, EMC performed a total thyroidectomy using a DaVinci robot for the first time in Russia.
