Coccygodynia
Coccygodynia, or coccygeal pain, is a syndrome characterized by transient bouts of pain in the coccyx or constant pain — these are the main symptoms of the disease. Sometimes the pain radiates (radiates) to the gluteal region, the inner surface of the thighs and the genital area. Due to the peculiarities of the structure and location of the pelvic organs associated with reproductive function, coccygodynia is observed mainly in women.
Pain syndrome can be caused by displacement or dislocation of the coccyx as a result of a fall or impact on a hard object, as well as myositis of adjacent muscles or the formation of scars in adjacent soft tissues. In addition, in some cases coccygodynia is associated with diseases of the nerves and muscles in the perineum, as well as their omission due to childbirth.
Diagnosis of the disease is performed with the mandatory participation of a gynecologist, a urologist and a neurologist to exclude all diseases similar to coccygodynia in symptoms. Ultrasound of the abdominal cavity and radiography of the sacrococcygeal spine are mandatory. If necessary, irrigography and rectoromanoscopy (examination of the rectum) are performed using special equipment.
Conservative treatment of coccygodynia includes a large amount of physiotherapy procedures, including treatment using an electrode inserted into the rectum. An indispensable condition for treatment is recreational gymnastics and manual therapy, if the patient has no contraindications. With excessively severe pain, novocaine blockades are indicated, sometimes even neuropsychotropic drugs can be prescribed to improve the negative emotional background. Surgical intervention is indicated only in case of fracture or dislocation of the coccyx.
