Stuttering in children: causes, correction
Why does stuttering occur?
First of all, the development of stuttering is influenced by a genetic predisposition. Often, parents can associate children's stuttering with severe fright or severe stressful situations that the child has experienced. But this connection has not been scientifically confirmed. There are a lot of patients who have stuttering against the background of complete well-being. Stress and serious illnesses that deplete the nervous system can become a trigger, but stuttering often occurs by itself. In 80% of cases, during the consultation during the medical history collection, it turns out that this pathology was in someone from close relatives.
Stuttering is very common in children who have not been able to speak for a long time and when they have learned, they try to speak quickly and a lot. As a result of such an avalanche-like flow, stuttering may occur. Sometimes parents confuse stuttering with "gushing speech", this feature of speech resolves itself over time.
Since the symptoms of stuttering are acute (it manifests itself at one moment), it is important to exclude the presence of concomitant neurological disorders. Therefore, when stuttering occurs, the first specialist to contact is a neurologist. The doctor will help differentiate stuttering from other speech pathologies, rule out neurological diseases that may be symptomatic of stuttering, and refer you to speech therapist.
Special examinations of children with stuttering are not required to make a diagnosis.
Treatment of stuttering in the EMC Children's Clinic
The main specialist who deals with patients with stuttering is a speech therapist, a speech pathologist who knows special techniques for correcting stuttering. Therefore, the main component in the correction of stuttering in children is pedagogical speech therapy support. It is almost impossible to get rid of stuttering without speech therapy. In the EMC Children's Clinic, a speech therapist and defectologist, Tatiana Kachenovskaya, deals with stuttering problems.
If corrective speech therapy does not give results, the neurologist prescribes medical symptomatic therapy, which helps to relieve the acute phase of the disease and increase the effectiveness of the speech therapy program. In some cases, consultation with a psychologist or neuropsychologist is required, who also conduct an appointment at the EMC Children's Clinic.
EMC also uses to treat stuttering. href="/programs_and_services/services/terapiya-s-ispolzovaniem-biologicheskoy-obratnoy-svyazi-bos-u-detey/">БОС-терапия (biofeedback). This is a modern medical technology that trains the patient's ability to independently regulate his physiological and psycho-emotional state. With the help of special sensors, the computer registers changing indicators of brain activity. The patient observes his indicators in real time in the form of simple visual or auditory stimuli and learns the skills of conscious management of the work of various systems of his body. At the EMC, we offer children unusual multimedia games in which they can act solely with the help of controlled body rhythms (every child can do this).
The high effectiveness of the correction of children with stuttering in EMC is achieved through an integrated approach: a combination of speech therapy, drug therapy, as well as BOS therapy with individual or family psychotherapy.
