Preparing for pregnancy
Careful pregnancy planning helps to increase the likelihood of conceiving and carrying a healthy baby. A set of preventive procedures aimed at minimizing the risk of congenital pathologies during pregnancy planning is called pre-pregnancy preparation (translated from Latin. - previous pregnancy).
A comprehensive examination in preparation for pregnancy is recommended to take place at least 3-6 months before conception. Since a child's health depends on the set of genetic biomaterials of both parents, it is necessary for both women and men to undergo such training.
The main task of the pre-pregnancy examination is to correct existing disorders in the health of the spouses so that conception occurs against the background of complete physical and psycho-emotional well-being.
Diagnosis before pregnancy
The pre-pregnancy examination includes three main stages:
-
Analysis of the spouses' general health status.
-
Preparing the health of the prospective parents for conception and the woman for carrying the baby (correction of identified violations).
-
Early diagnosis and management of pregnancy.
During the pre-pregnancy consultation, the doctor will determine the need and sequence of diagnostic and preventive procedures, answer in detail all questions of interest to the spouses and provide explanations regarding lifestyle.
Comprehensive examination for a woman
A woman's pre-pregnancy training includes:
-
Collecting anamnesis – personal and family (eating habits, lifestyle, presence of any diseases, including hereditary ones, previous illnesses, operations, living conditions, menstrual function, sexual activity, etc.) .Physical examination – anthropometry (measurement of height, weight, BMI, blood pressure, heart rate, waist to hip ratio, etc.), examination of mammary glands, musculoskeletal, respiratory system and other body systems.Obstetric and gynecological examination:
-
Gynecological examination;
-
Smear on flora, cytology (PAP test);
-
Examination of the vaginal discharge for an infectious group.
-
General clinical studies include blood tests (for blood type and Rh factor, total, biochemical, glucose, clotting) and general urinalysis.
-
Infection screening smear for STIs by PCR (to detect hepatitis B, C, sexual infections, HIV).
-
Screening for specific antibodies to measles, chickenpox, and rubella viruses. (If a woman is vaccinated against these infections, screening is not performed).
-
Hormone tests (TSH, free T4, AT to TPO and TG, prolactin, LH, FSH, estradiol, testosterone, cortisol, etc.).
-
Blood test for the concentration of homocysteine, vitamin D (if necessary.
-
Instrumental diagnostics:
-
Ultrasound of the small pelvis;
-
Consultation with a mammologist.
-
- Consultations of specialized specialists – endocrinologist, cardiologist, dentist, otorhinolaryngologist and others (according to indications).
Depending on the results of the examination, the doctor may prescribe additional diagnostic measures.Comprehensive examination for men
Pre-pregnancy preparation is mandatory for a man, as well as for a woman, even if he feels absolutely healthy. A comprehensive examination of a man, in addition to collecting family and personal medical history, includes:-
Consultation with a urologist/andrologist.
-
Blood tests for blood type and Rh factor to prevent Rh conflict.
-
Research on infections (HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and C, STIs).
Men at the EMC can undergo a comprehensive examination program in preparation for pregnancy.Men with a history of risk factors (previous inflammatory diseases of the reproductive system, STIs, work in hazardous industries, etc.) are recommended to take a spermogram. If there is a family history of hereditary diseases, the couple is recommended to consult a geneticist and karyotyping of both parents.All these examinations are recommended for conditionally healthy men and women. Patients with chronic and acute diseases need to undergo additional studies, depending on their pathology.Comprehensive examination for women over 40 years of age
The topic of age for conception and bearing a baby is perceived by women in different ways. In European countries, pregnancy after 40 has long been the norm. And in Russia, the number of pregnancies and births among women 40+ has increased significantly over the past decade.All the worries about complications that occur in pregnant women at this age and the risks are more far-fetched. A physically healthy woman over the age of 40 has the same chances of carrying and giving birth to a healthy baby as healthy girls aged 20-25. Therefore, pre-pregnancy preparation for women over 40 years of age includes similar stages and research methods. However, if the patient is diagnosed with any abnormalities, additional examination methods may be required.Advantages of contacting the EMC-
