Chemoradiotherapy using the RapidArc/IGRT method helped the patient to completely get rid of the stage 2 tongue tumor. A PET/CT scan after treatment showed a complete disappearance of the metabolic activity of the pathological formation.
A 58-year-old patient was diagnosed with cancer of the left half of the tongue with lesions of the submandibular and upper cervical lymph nodes of stage II.
The patient applied to the EMC, where, after a discussion at the consultation, he was recommended chemoradiotherapy using the RapidArc/IGRT method. After successful completion of the course of treatment, a control PET/CT scan revealed the complete disappearance of the tumor.
PET/CT scan (from 06/04/15) examination before treatment:
The PET/CT picture of hypermetabolic tongue root formation on the left corresponds to a tumor. There were no signs of germination into the contralateral sections. A significant increase in the metabolism of the lateral (jugular-abdominal) lymph node, an increase in the metabolism of the deep lateral lymph nodes on the left (IIA) – corresponds to secondary changes. There were no signs of secondary changes in the chest or abdominal organs. Volumetric formation of the right lobe of the thyroid gland without abnormal metabolism requires additional examination (ultrasound, consultation with an endocrinologist).
PET/CT scan (02.12.2015) post-treatment study:
There were no foci of pathological metabolic activity. In comparison with the PET/CT study from 06/04/2015, there was a positive trend in the form of an increase in pathological metabolic activity (complete metabolic response) and a decrease in pathological formations.
Thus, the RapidArc/IGRT radiation technology helps to remove the tumor without surgical intervention.
