In the February issue of the journal Psychologies, an endocrinologist at the European Medical Center Olga Yatsishina acted as an expert in the article "Detox is another diet?".
As the name implies, the article tries to understand in a reasoned manner whether detox is one of the many varieties of fashionable diets or is it an independent direction in the field of a healthy lifestyle. After reading the article, you will be able to find out why a modern person needs detox and what results should be expected from it.
"Our body has a self-regulating mechanism that helps it get rid of all unnecessary things and repair damage," says Olga Yatsishina. - However, recently it has been increasingly confronted with toxic substances for which it is not genetically prepared: previously, many of them simply did not exist. For example, these are pesticides, heavy metals, preservatives and dyes that enter the body with sugary carbonated drinks, fast food, sausages, and industrial pastries."
Dr. Yatsishina believes that extreme detox courses (with severe dietary restrictions, the use of various "cleansing" products, etc.) should be conducted only under the supervision of a specialist. At the same time, if after such a detox you intend to return to your previous lifestyle again, then there will be no benefit from it at all – only stress for the body.
Ideally, the principles of detoxification should become your daily habit. "This (detox – ed.) is not a temporary measure, but rather a way of life," the doctor emphasizes. "Otherwise, the so-called detox can only have a small and short-term effect." That is why the endocrinologist advises not to rely on the buzzword, but to take more care of a balanced diet, rely on physical activity and meditation techniques that help you stay in touch with yourself. "Yoga practice will also help strengthen the nervous system, normalize metabolic processes and generally improve the body's health," Olga adds.
"For those who seek to cleanse their body, it is not strict rules that are more important, but the general principle of moderation and common sense," concludes the doctor. "Cleansing methods must take into account not only our character, but also our physical, emotional state and lifestyle.. The main thing is the needs of our body, which we need to learn to hear." In other words, unlike diets, a real detox is, first of all, an opportunity to listen to your body and get to know it better. Perhaps this step will be the first on the way to your longevity, health and harmony with yourself.
