Prostate adenoma
Prostate adenoma is one of the most common diseases of the genitourinary system that many men face after the age of 40. This is a benign formation of the prostate gland that causes problems with urination. With timely diagnosis, it is treated conservatively, but in a neglected state it can create serious health problems, in such cases surgical intervention is required. At the Urological Clinic of the European Medical Center, you can undergo a comprehensive urological examination of the genitourinary system.
CAUSES
In most cases, prostate adenoma appears during age-related hormonal changes in the body. Most often after the age of 40, when the amount of testosterone begins to decrease and the level of estrogens in the blood increases. This leads to active division of prostate cells and the appearance of neoplasms.
Men, as a rule, consult a doctor when there are serious problems with urination, that is, not at the first stage of the disease. As a result, the treatment regimen is more complex, and in 40% of cases surgical intervention is required.
An important factor in this matter is considered to be a genetic predisposition. Therefore, all men over the age of 40, especially those with a family history of prostate adenoma, should undergo regular urological examinations to avoid the onset of the disease or cure it at an early stage.
RISK FACTORS
- Sedentary lifestyle.
- Hypothermia. Alcohol and spicy food abuse.
SYMPTOMS
The first symptoms of prostate adenoma are:
- difficulty and/or rapid urination;
- tension during urination;
- weak urine flow;
- long waits before starting and interruptions during urination;
- night urination.
It is important to remember that the disease is asymptomatic in the early stages, so all men over the age of 40 are recommended to undergo regular routine check-up with a urologist. If the diagnosis is confirmed, treatment of the prostate gland should be started immediately.
DIAGNOSIS OF prostate adenoma
Prostate adenoma is not difficult to diagnose. The initial examination takes into account all the patient's complaints. It is mandatory to determine the level of PSA (prostate-specific antigen) in the blood in order to differentiate the quality of the neoplasm.
To confirm the diagnosis and determine the size of the neoplasm, transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) and uroflowmetry are performed. Transrectal ultrasound examination allows not only to determine the size of prostate adenoma, but also to diagnose or exclude prostate cancer, as well as to determine the presence of nodules, stones and residual urine. During uroflowmetry, a special device records the time and speed of urine flow to determine the degree of difficulty urinating.
The research results are prepared in the EMC's own clinical diagnostic laboratory, so they can be obtained as soon as possible.
TREATMENT OF PROSTATE ADENOMA
Without treatment, prostate adenoma progresses and constricts the urethra, making it difficult to urinate. This leads to difficulties in emptying the bladder, congestion, and urolithiasis. In the future, the situation worsens and can lead to kidney failure.
Treatment of prostate adenoma can be conservative and surgical. The choice of therapy method is based on the results of diagnostic studies, the size of the neoplasm and the degree of urination disorder.
During conservative treatment, the following are prescribed:
- prostatic enzyme inhibitors;
- adrenoblockers;
- herbal preparations
If conservative therapy is ineffective, surgical treatment is used: transurethral resection of the prostate gland, extraperitoneal robot-assisted adenomectomy, laser vaporization. In most cases, the duration of hospitalization does not exceed two days.
