Depending on the diagnosis, radiation therapy can be used as the main treatment method or as part of a treatment plan that also includes surgery, chemotherapy, or bone marrow transplantation.
Radiation therapy uses directed ionizing radiation to destroy cancer cells and reduce tumor volume. In order to provide children and their parents with the most effective and appropriate treatment method, the EMC Radiation Therapy Center offers a full range of radiation therapy services for children, including the latest methods that can only be used in a few centers around the world. We use technologies that allow us to influence the tumor as precisely as it is possible in principle at the current stage of technology development.
The EMC Radiation Therapy Center for the treatment of pediatric oncological diseases is:
- Selection of the most accurate treatment method based on three-dimensional MRI and four-dimensional CT scanning. Sophisticated imaging technology allows you to obtain detailed images of internal organs and accurately determine the location of the tumor. The four-dimensional CT scan is synchronized with the respiratory monitoring system, which records even minor body movements during breathing, which allows for even greater accuracy during radiotherapy.
- Image-controlled radiation therapy (IGRT) using new technologies from the TrueBeam and Trilogy™ systems. When using TrueBeam and Trilogy equipment, doctors can choose one of the most advanced treatment methods: three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy, intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), stereotactic radiosurgery, and other treatments for body or brain tumors. This is especially important in the treatment of small formations. Modern technologies make it possible to quickly and accurately adjust the radiation dose to small formations, thereby minimizing the degree of exposure to radiation on the body and increasing the effectiveness of treatment.
- Radiation therapy with modulated intensity (IMRT). IMRT technology allows doctors to more accurately direct an increased radiation dose to the tumor, minimizing the impact on healthy tissues.
- Although the treatment generally does not cause painful sensations, some children may be afraid of the equipment and the radiation process itself. Pediatric anesthesiologists will select sedatives for younger children to make the treatment process more comfortable. To ensure the safest and most effective treatment, radiation therapy is performed by using a large number of small doses over a period of time. Most children require short therapy sessions five days a week for several weeks.
